her chest was bound with lace
He screamed at her to run
But she wouldn't listen.
"Liber-"
He is cut off in a choked gurgle,
bright splashes of red falling against the rain
She raised her head slowly, hair parting in a curtain
the flag was trampled in the dirt and churning mud
But she couldn't care because
there were men falling all around her,
little frightened boys pretending their anger was worth something.
I'm sorry
She shut her eyes, lifting the flag.
It was a burden she would always bear.
For every war, for every life a price was paid
and she knew then, it would never end.
So long as there was life, it would never end.
